Black Neighborhoods at Risk as U.S. Pushes to Cancel Climate Protection

As nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population sweltered under extreme heat advisories, news echoed through Black neighborhoods already scorched by the effects of climate change: the Trump administration was moving to tear the heart out of America’s climate protections.

In a decision that environmental activists say is a severe blow to efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming, the Trump administration is pushing to cancel important climate protection measures. This move has grave implications, especially for vulnerable communities, including many Black neighborhoods.

Black communities, which have been disproportionately affected by environmental hazards and climate change consequences, are now facing an even greater risk as crucial climate protections are being dismantled. The cancellation of these measures threatens to exacerbate existing inequalities and put the health and well-being of Black residents in jeopardy.

Impacts on Black Neighborhoods

The repercussions of canceling important climate protections are particularly dire for Black neighborhoods across the United States. These communities are already grappling with a myriad of environmental injustices, including pollution, lack of access to clean air and water, and extreme weather events.

By rolling back critical climate regulations, the Trump administration is essentially giving a free pass to polluting industries, further exposing Black neighborhoods to harmful emissions and toxic substances.
